Since 1973, committed people in Uptown Chicago with a political passion for social justice, influenced by poverty programs and community activism of the sixties, were convinced by a group of high school aged youth pushed out of the public school system and facing lives of dependency to find a place where they could be safe, and experience an open learning environment that encouraged self-determination, individuality, creativity, change, community responsibility and commitment. Prologue responds to the educational needs of youth ages 16-24. Prologue has 30 years of experience working with low income youth. Our goal is self-actualization and empowerment. This goal is embedded within pedagogy, methodology and organizational structure of our school. As young people acquire skills in reading, writing, and mathematics, and as they improve their social and employment skills, they are better able to become self-sufficient, and full participating members of society. Our schools curriculum is influenced by many things including the following: the social forces of the day, strong commitment to social justice, and understanding of the relationship between education, self assertiveness, sense of freedom, and the meaning of authentic human being.
